19th January 2003
Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration
Epiphany 2

We invite you to maintain a spirit of silence as the prelude begins our service.

OUR APPROACH TO GOD
Prelude
Introit

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
WHO MADE HEAVEN & EARTH!

Welcome

Call to Worship:  Psalm 30

I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up,
AND DID NOT LET MY FOES REJOICE OVER ME.
O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life...
SING PRAISES TO THE LORD, O YOU HIS FAITHFUL ONES, AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD'S HOLY NAME!

*Hymn 375 "Jesus Calls Us"

Let us be before our God in silence.

Unison Prayer: Psalm 31: 1-5

IN YOU, O LORD, I SEEK REFUGE; DO NOT LET ME EVER BE PUT TO SHAME; IN YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS DELIVER ME. INCLINE YOUR EAR TO ME; RESCUE ME SPEEDILY. BE A ROCK OF REFUGE FOR ME, A STRONG FORTRESS TO SAVE ME. YOU ARE INDEED MY ROCK AND MY FORTRESS; FOR YOUR NAME'S SAKE LEAD ME AND GUIDE ME, TAKE ME OUT OF THE NET THAT IS HIDDEN FOR ME, FOR YOU ARE MY REFUGE. INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT; YOU HAVE REDEEMED ME, O LORD, FAITHFUL GOD!

Kyrie (sung)
LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.
CHRIST, HAVE MERCY ON US.
LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.

A Word of Assurance:

The Summary of the Law (Mk 12: 29-31)
This is the first commandment:
HEAR O ISRAEL, THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE!  THEREFORE YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.
This is the second commandment:
YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.
There is no greater commandment than these.
