Teens Commit Life to Christ!
Three New Utrecht teenagers: Nichole Colon, Lauren DeMatteo and Jason Carrion made their public profession of faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and were confirmed on June 29, 2003 at New Utrecht Reformed Church. The teens embarked in a year long learning project with Youth Minister Leroy Downs and will begin a second year of study on Sunday, September 21st, 2003.

The teens each wrote their own personal statement of commitment to Christ which they shared with the board of elders on June 22 and again with the congregation at the time of their confirmation. May God be with them in their teenage years!

Remember - Reflect - Rebuild

September 11th at NURC: A Quiet Commemoration
New Utrecht Church Sanctuary will be opened on Thursday, September 11th, from Noon - 3 PM in remembrance of all those who suffered and died during the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks. The church sanctuary will observe silence during those hours, and meditation booklets will be passed out to all visitors. The church opening is to provide an opportunity for neighbors and community members to pause to pray and remember, allowing the great embrace of God through New Utrecht to hold and heal their sorrow. The September 11 commemoration is being hosted by Elder Louise Fabiszak, Chair of the church's outreach commitee and Deacon Rose Lood.

Bob Buonvino: Columbus Day Grand Marshal!
Friends of Historic New Utrecht President and Scout 20 Troop Leader Bob Buonvino has been selected as one of the honorees to serve as grand marshal at this year's Bensonhurst Columbus Day Parade, scheduled for October 11, 2003. A Sunday, September 28th Brunch at the Oriental Manor will honor Bob and the other grand marshals.

Rose Lood Among RCA Women Honored At 375th Church Celebration!

New Utrecht's own Deacon Rose Lood, who continues to serve faithfully as a member of the consistory, President of the New Utrecht Liberty Pole Association and Friends of Historic New Utrecht trustee, was among 50 RCA women whose names were held up in a circle of honor at this year's General Synod in Holland, Michigan. Also remembered at the ceremony was New Utrecht friend and Woman of Valor awardee, the late Elanor Adams.

From the Minister's Desk
This week brings with it the memories of a tragedy that changed our lives in this city just two dozen months ago. This week also brings with it the change in season, with cool nights upon us, school openings around us, and the harvest yield that reminds of us God's bounty shared between us. At New Utrecht, it is a time to remember ourselves, put ourselves together again as community, calling to mind and heart, the reason we gather at a table of plenty: love, strength, forgiveness and hope for each of us and all whom God sends our way. We remember with sadness those among us who have gone before us and who have joined the company of saints at the great feast: John Soldo, Albert Hollenga, Hank Erickson and Josephine Safay.

We gather in a deeply injured edifice, whose age is showing in its cracks and crevices, and whose wounds require great financial sacrifice from us to keep it holy and whole!

We invite you to gather with us, to break bread, the grain of God's field, to drink to the fullness of life and to make that fullness so in acts of mercy, love and justice in our world.

Be with us, this Sunday, September 14th at 11 AM and the weeks to follow. We look forward to greeting you!
