Scout Sabbath

The New Utrecht Reformed Church is very proud of our troops and packs and we are deeply grateful to Scout Master Bob Buonvino and all the assistant Scout Masters, Pack Leaders, Assistant Leaders, Den Mothers, committee members, all of the Scouters---past and present, living and deceased---the men and women who give of their weekends, year in and year out, to raise up children of a greater human community, respnsible citizens of the world. Thank you for sharing the love of your children with us. We admire your work. Thank you!!!

Today's service is dedicated to the memory of all departed Scouts and Scouters who served Troop/Pack 20 at New Utrecht Church. The scouts invite us as their guests for a reception at the conclusion of service.

The flowers today are given by Boy Scout Troop 20 & Cub Scout Pack 20, BSA in memory of our deceased members and the Reverend Martin Paul Luther.

We invite you to maintain a spirit of silence as the prelude begins our service.

Welcome
The Presentation of the Colors
The Pledge of Allegiance

Hymn "America the Beautiful"

Call to Worship -
God of the sunlight, God of the sea,
GOD OF THE TWILIGHT, GOD OF THE TREE.
God of the midnight, God of the day,
GOD OF THE STARLIGHT, TEACH ME TO PRAY.

Let us be before our God in silence.

Opening Prayer - A Celtic Prayer
O TREE OF LIFE, THE BLOSSOMS ON THE BRANCHES ARE YOUR PEOPLE.
THE SINGING BIRDS ARE YOUR ANGELS,
THE WHISPERING BREEZE IS YOUR SPIRIT.
O TREE OF LIFE, MAY THE BLOSSOMS BRING FORTH THE SWEETEST FRUIT,
MAY THE BIRDS SING OUT THE HIGHEST PRAISE
MAY YOUR SPIRIT COVER ALL WITH GENTLE BREATH. AMEN.

Kyrie (sung)

LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.
CHRIST, HAVE MERCY ON US.
LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.

A Word of Assurance: Psalm 103:2-5a

The Summary of God's Law (Mk 12:29b-31)
This is the first commandment:
HEAR O ISRAEL,
THE LORD OUR GOD,
THE LORD IS ONE!
THEREFORE YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD
WITH ALL YOUR HEART,
WITH ALL YOUR SOUL,
WITH ALL YOUR MIND,
AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.

This is the second commandment:
YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.
There is no greater commandment than these.

Anthem "Battle Hymn of the Republic" Julia Ward Howe

THE WORD OF GOD
*Responsive Reading: "The Scout Law Prayer"
Our God makes us trustworthy for there are those who place their trust in us.
MAKE US LOYAL, FOR THROUGH LOYALTY WE REACH OUR HIGHEST IDEALS.
Teach us to be helpful, for through helpfulness we forget our selfishness.
MAKE US FRIENDLY, FOR THERE ARE SO MANY WHO NEED A FRIEND.
Train us in courtesy, for courtesy is the carpet on life's floor - it deadens the sound of shuffling feet and adds warmth to silence.
MAKE US KIND, FOR KINDNESS IS THE OIL IN THE COGS OF LIFE'S MACHINERY.
Insist upon our obedience, for the final victory comes only to the one who obeys your will.
MAKE US CHEERFUL, FOR CHEERFULNESS IS THE GREEN GRASS AMONG THE ROCKS IN THE PATH OF OUR LIVES.
Train us in thrift, for thrifty habits brighten our future.
MAKE US BRAVE. BRAVE IN THE DARK AND BRAVE IN THE LIGHT.
Help us to be clean in thought, word and deed.
AND MAY WE REMEMBER THAT OUR BODIES ARE HOLY TEMPLES NOT TO BE ABUSED OR USED TO HURT OTHERS.

*Gloria Patri (Hymn No. 623)
All Christians are invited to join us in this affirmation:
GLORY BE TO THE FATHER
AND TO THE SON
AND TO THE HOLY GHOST.
AS IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING,
IS NOW AND EVER SHALL BE,
WORLD WITHOUT END,
AMEN, AMEN!
